Registered Massage Therapy in Edmonton

Trauma is held in both the mind and the body. While psychological treatment works to process and resolve traumatic memory and meaning, the body's patterns often take longer to shift.

Registered massage therapy is available at Genovese Trauma & PTSD Recovery as a meaningful support for the physical part of healing. It can be accessed alongside psychotherapy as part of a coordinated approach to recovery, or as a standalone service for those seeking targeted, trauma-informed care for the body's stress and trauma responses.

Myofascial Release Massage Therapy

Our Registered Massage Therapist specializes in myofascial and neurologically informed care. It is a targeted, therapeutic approach that works with the body's connective tissue to address patterns of restriction, chronic tension, and pain.

Unlike general relaxation massage, myofascial release is clinical and precise. It is used to address deeper patterns of holding and connective tissue dysfunction that may contribute to pain, limited mobility, or persistent physical discomfort. This work is particularly well-suited to clients with complex or longstanding physical concerns, including those whose symptoms are connected to ongoing stress, anxiety, or trauma.

Part of an Integrated Approach to Trauma Recovery

Massage therapy at our clinic is intentionally offered alongside psychotherapy and other therapeutic supports. Many clients choose to coordinate massage appointments alongside their therapy sessions, finding that working with the emotional and physical aspects of healing within one model of care feels more connected and effective.

Myofascial Release Massage Therapy FAQs

When connective tissue becomes tight or restricted, it can contribute to pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, and ongoing discomfort. Myofascial release is a massage treatment that works with the body’s connective tissue to address restriction and tension. Myofascial release uses targeted techniques to help improve movement and reduce tension in the body.

While general massage is often focused on relaxation or muscle relief, myofascial release is typically more targeted and therapeutic. It is used to address deeper patterns of restriction, chronic tension, and connective tissue dysfunction that may be contributing to pain or limited movement. At our clinic, this work is provided thoughtfully and implemented at your pace.

Treatment should not feel painful or overwhelming. Some areas may feel tender or intense, but our massage therapist treats you with care and pays close attention to pacing and your comfort throughout the session. The goal is not to force the body, but to work with it in a way that feels therapeutic, respectful, and manageable.

Treatment can often be provided without fully undressing, depending on the area being treated and the approach being used. In many cases, myofascial release is performed without oil or lotion so that the therapist can work more directly with the tissue. Appropriate draping can be provided throughout treatment. Our massage therapist will explain what is recommended for your session and will always prioritize your comfort and consent.

Trauma-informed massage therapy means treatment is provided with attention to safety, pacing, communication, consent, and the body’s responses throughout the session. We understand that stress and trauma can affect the nervous system, physical tension patterns, and a person’s comfort with treatment. Care is always tailored, collaborative, and respectful of each client’s needs.

Your first appointment includes time to discuss your concerns, symptoms, treatment goals, and relevant history. Our massage therapist will explain the treatment approach and tailor the session to your needs. Treatment is adapted based on your comfort level and your body's response throughout the session.

Myofascial release may be helpful for chronic muscle tension, pain, restriction, stiffness, postural strain, headaches, jaw tension, reduced mobility, and longstanding holding patterns in the body. It can be especially supportive for people whose bodies tend to stay braced, guarded, or tense in response to ongoing stress.

Chronic stress, anxiety, and trauma can gradually shift the body’s physical baseline. Over time, the body may become conditioned to be hyperalert, with muscular guarding and tension, and to have difficulty fully relaxing. This can show up as pain, tightness, restricted movement, shallow breathing, fatigue, and a sense that the body has difficulty settling, even when there is no immediate danger.

When the body has been under prolonged stress, it may begin to hold tension and restriction as a protective pattern. Myofascial release can help address these patterns by working with the connective tissue and areas of chronic holding in a careful, targeted way. This may help reduce restriction, improve mobility, ease discomfort, and support a more settled physical state.

Not at all. Some people seek treatment for pain or restrictions, while others arrange a treatment because they notice chronic tension, stress-related tightness, difficulty relaxing, or their body feels constantly braced. Treatment can be helpful for both symptom relief and broader support of physical regulation and recovery.

Many people feel looser, calmer, lighter, or more comfortable in their bodies after a session. Some may notice temporary soreness, fatigue, or a need for extra rest as the body adjusts. Responses vary, but treatment is intended to support greater ease, mobility, and regulation over time.

Yes. Massage therapy can be a meaningful complement to psychotherapy and other therapeutic or medical supports. For many people, stress, trauma, and anxiety are carried not only emotionally, but physically as well. Massage and myofascial work can help address the tension and nervous system activation that often accompany emotional distress, supporting a more integrated approach to recovery. Many clients appreciate being able to support both the emotional and physical aspects of healing within one coordinated model of care.

No. Massage therapy at Genovese Trauma & PTSD Recovery is available both as a standalone service and as part of a coordinated approach alongside psychotherapy or other supports. Many clients choose to address the physical effects of stress and trauma independently, while others prefer to work with both dimensions of recovery within one integrated model of care. Either way, treatment is provided with the same trauma-informed approach and attention to your individual needs.
