Sexual Assault Treatment

Healing After Sexual Assault

The journey after experiencing sexual assault can feel overwhelming, isolating, and full of challenges. Whether it happened recently or years ago, even in childhood, the impact can continue to affect your daily life.

You don't have to walk this path alone.

You deserve compassionate, expert support on your healing journey.

As a psychologist with extensive experience, I’ve helped many survivors reclaim their sense of safety, strength, and self. I’d be honoured to support you too.

Understanding the Psychological Impact

Sexual assault affects everyone differently, but many survivors describe common experiences, such as:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by memories that appear without warning

  • Disconnection from yourself or the people around you

  • Always being on alert, unable to fully relax

  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships

  • Nightmares or trouble sleeping

  • Anxiety in situations that remind you of what happened

These responses aren’t signs of weakness—they’re natural reactions to something that shook your sense of safety and control. Your mind and body are doing their best to protect you, even if those reactions no longer serve you now.

Specialized Support for Everyone

Sexual assault affects people of all genders, ages, backgrounds, and identities. At Genovese Trauma & PTSD Recovery, I provide inclusive, affirming care with specialized experience supporting:

  • Women navigating the aftermath of adult sexual assault
  • Men processing childhood sexual abuse
  • People of all gender identities healing from sexual trauma

I work with both recent survivors and those revisiting experiences from years ago. Support is also available for partners and family members walking alongside a loved one on their healing journey.

Treatment Approaches Tailored to You

Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all. Together, we’ll find a treatment approach that fits your unique situation and needs. My specialized training includes three evidence-based therapies that are especially effective in addressing sexual trauma.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they become less emotionally intense. It’s especially helpful when:

  • You struggle to put the experience into words.
  • The memories feel overwhelming to talk about.
  • You experience vivid flashbacks or strong physical reactions.

With EMDR, many people notice a shift in how they relate to their trauma. The memories remain part of your story—but they no longer dominate the life you're creating.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

CPT helps you explore how trauma has shaped your thoughts and beliefs about yourself, others, and the world. It’s especially helpful when:

  • You struggle with shame, guilt, or self-blame.
  • You view trust, safety, or relationships differently.
  • You feel like the assault changed how you see yourself, others and the world.

CPT doesn’t require you to talk about the trauma in detail, making it a good fit if you’re not ready to revisit the specifics.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

PE helps you gradually approach trauma memories and situations you’ve been avoiding. This approach can be especially helpful when:

  • Avoidance of certain places, people, or activities is limiting your life
  • You want to reclaim parts of your life that once felt meaningful
  • Facing your fears directly -- with support -- feels like the right approach for you

PE reduces the emotional grip of trauma memories through structured, supported exposure to what you’ve been avoiding, helping you regain control and confidence.

Our Work Together

In our first session, we’ll take the time to understand your unique situation and goals. I’ll listen to your concerns and answer any questions you may have. Together, we’ll determine the best approach for your recovery journey.

Many survivors I work with share that they appreciate both the specialized expertise I bring and the genuine, human connection that makes even the most difficult conversations feel possible.
